Downtown area of Kyoto city is roughly the block between Karasuma and Kawaramachi Streets on the Shijo Dori. Parts of Sanjo Dori are also part of the downtown area and Sanjo Dori is specially known for it's drinking and eating establishments. The Shijo dori area consists many department stores, high end shops and restaurants. You can translate Shijo and Sanjo dori as fourth and third avenues.
Many foreign tourists, when they visit Kyoto city make it a point to spend an evening around this area. The Teramachi shopping arcade is another famous place for boutique shops and Nishiki Market is known for foods that are famous for Kyoto.
