With a long history of more than 1600 years, along with Dogo and Arima, is one of Japan's three ancient Onsen.
It takes about 140 minutes by the Joban Line Limited Express from Tokyo Station to Yumoto Station. Yumoto Station is located in the center of Onsen resort.
About 2 hours from Tokyo or Narita Airport to Iwaki Yumoto IC via expressway. The source of the Onsen, which boasts 5 tons of water per minute, is a natural sulfur onsen of 59 degrees Celsius, which boasts a discharge of 5 tons per minute drawn from about 50 m underground. Onsen is distributed to each facility through the underground in the town in a complete discharge system.

1600年以上の歴史を持ち、有馬、道後と共に日本三古泉のひとつ。
東京駅から常磐線特急で2時間と少し。湯本駅から出れば、そこが温泉郷。
都内や成田空港から高速道路経由でいわき湯本ICまで約2時間の距離。
毎分５トンの湯量を誇る温泉の源泉は、地下約50ｍから汲み上げた毎分5ｔの湧出量を誇る摂氏59度の天然硫黄泉。完全放流式で町内の地下を通して各施設に配湯している。
泉質は全国的に珍しい【含硫黄－ナトリウム－塩化物・硫酸塩温泉】で、「美人の湯」（美肌作用・解毒作用・末梢血管拡張作用）、「心臓の湯」（血圧を低下させる～動脈硬化、高血圧に効く）、「熱の湯」（高齢者向き～保温効果が高い）を始め数々の効能を併せ持つ。
近くには、J1昇格間近の「いわきFC」の本拠地FCパークや、スタジアム、フィールドがあり、山、海、川などの自然にも恵まれ、各種アクティビティーが楽しめる、スポーツツーリズム温泉郷。
温泉郷内には、スパリゾートハワイアンズもあり、昭和の時代からフラの文化が根付いており、2015年には、いわき湯本温泉のフラ女将が中心となり「フラのまち」を宣言した。
