Tsukiji Fish Market is the largest and most famous wholesale seafood market in the world.

It's an incredibly busy place, handling 2,000+ tons of product every day.

Tuna Auction - 1:42

Tsukiji Market is widely known for its tuna auction, which takes place around 5:30 am. It's become a popular tourist attraction, with 120 lucky sushi enthusiasts allowed to watch some of the auction take place from up close.

The tuna auction has become so popular people start waiting in line as early as 2:30 am to secure their spot. I was so lucky the morning I went because I was the 120th person... a minute later I would've been out of luck.

The auction viewing is split into two times. The first group of 60 get to watch the auction from 5:25 am - 5:50 am and the second group from 5:50 am - 6:15 am.

Note: The tuna auction isn't a show. It's a real auction with lots on the line. So, if you interrupt the auction in any way you will get the boot (and rightfully so). Be polite, respectful, and follow the rules:)

There’s way more to Tsukiji than just the auction. The market has so much to offer and really put my stomach to the test. I spoiled myself with a fresh sushi breakfast and two rounds of grilled king crab legs.
